Self-reliance is not one dramatic project. It is a sequence of useful systems that become more capable as they work together. Begin with the part of your household that needs attention now, learn enough to make a sound next decision, and build from there.
The Modloba pathway
- Water: store, move, filter, circulate, maintain and use water with intention.
- Compost and Soil: keep organic resources working and build healthier soil.
- Food Production: grow useful, nourishing food close to home.
- Shelter and Structures: protect systems, tools, plants and animals.
- Livestock & Fish: add animals and fish responsibly when the foundations are ready.
Begin with a simple household audit
Ask where water is used, where it is lost, and what happens when supply is interrupted. Observe where water could be stored, filtered, circulated or reused. Then choose one problem worth solving—not every problem at once.
Choose the next useful step
Most homes start with water because it supports every later stage. Once water is being managed intentionally, compost and soil help that water work harder. Food production becomes more dependable when those foundations are ready. Shelter and structures protect the systems you have built, and livestock and fish belong later, when water, feed, suitable housing or pond infrastructure, and daily care are genuinely in place.
