Assess Your Site and Plan a Useful Structure

SHELTER · SITE · PLANNING

Assess the site before you decide what to build.

The most useful structure begins with observation. In Cape Town, wind, winter drainage, summer heat, shade and access can matter more than the material you choose.

Make a simple working map

Mark morning and afternoon sun, prevailing wind, where winter water gathers, taps and pipes, paths, doors, existing trees and the places you work most. Then mark what needs protection: seedlings, a water filter, tools, harvested food, a coop or a shaded work spot.

Plan for ordinary use

Choose the smallest structure that makes a regular task easier. Keep maintenance points reachable, leave room to carry tools and harvests, and avoid blocking drainage routes. For major load-bearing, electrical or service work, use qualified local advice.

Next step: create protection
