SHELTER · CLIMATE · PROTECTION
Create layered protection for wind, sun and winter rain.
A Cape Town garden does not need to be sealed off. It needs the right degree of protection in the places that matter: a calmer seedling area, shade for a tank or workbench, and a dry route for regular tasks.
Slow wind rather than making it turbulent
Use permeable screens, suitable planting, shade netting or well-braced structures to soften exposure. Place tender plants and light materials where they have support, and inspect fixings before stormy weather.
Make shade and rain cover useful
Shade should reduce heat without making productive beds too dark. Rain cover should shed water away from paths and foundations without concentrating runoff where it will erode soil or flood a work area.
