LIVESTOCK · FEED · DRY STORAGE
Plan chicken feed and dry storage before the flock depends on it.
Feed is a recurring household commitment, not a once-off purchase. A useful plan considers what the birds need, where supplies will stay dry and secure, how often the household can restock, and how the routine changes when weather or travel interrupts the usual pattern.
Make suitable feed the dependable foundation
Use an appropriate, balanced poultry feed as the reliable base for the birds in your care. Garden surplus and suitable household scraps can be part of a wider system, but they should not become an excuse to improvise the flock’s whole diet. When in doubt about feed or life-stage needs, ask a qualified local supplier or veterinarian.
Protect feed from damp, pests and waste
Store supplies in a dry, secure, clearly labelled place that is easy to check before it runs low. Cape Town’s winter damp can spoil an otherwise sensible store, while summer heat and pests can make an unsecured store difficult to manage. Keep the stock arrangement simple enough to see what is being used and what needs replacing.
Buy to the rhythm you can maintain
Choose a purchasing rhythm that fits your budget, storage capacity and the number of birds you can care for well. Leave a small practical buffer for a delayed shop or difficult week, rather than stocking so much that the store becomes stale, cluttered or vulnerable to moisture.
Connect feed to the rest of the home system
Dry storage, clean feeders, composting and the garden should support one another. Use the dry storage and work-zone guide if the supplies still do not have a protected place.
