SHELTER · GROWING · MICROCLIMATE
Build a protected growing space that you can ventilate and care for.
A nursery, tunnel, cold frame or greenhouse can make propagation and seasonal growing more reliable. In Cape Town, however, protection must include airflow, wind resistance, shade when needed and a realistic water route.
Match the structure to the task
A small shaded seedling bench may be more useful than a large greenhouse. Start with the job: hardening seedlings, sheltering herbs, raising transplants or extending a manageable crop window. Put it near daily observation and gentle irrigation.
Prevent heat and damp problems
Provide ventilation, avoid overcrowding, and watch how the space behaves on hot, windy and wet days. Secure coverings and frames before winter storms. If a protected space cannot be opened, watered and checked easily, reduce its size or simplify the design.
